The Paragon Oven

This is the Paragon KM24D knifemakers oven. It can handle blade stock up to 24 inches long. It's programable for time and duration and can reach temperatures of 2000 degrees. This is sufficient for most popular stainless blade steels.

I chose to have this oven modified for reduction firing. This means I feed argon gas into it while it's firing to create a non-oxidizing atmosphere inside. In this way, I can avoid the hassle of having to wrap my blades in Inconel foil to protect them from oxidation. The downside is that the lack of oxygen causes the heating coils to burn out sooner but that's something I can live with to avoid that foil. You can see the argon gas cylinders standing behind the oven.
