Quenching Tank
When warpage is a possibility (like with long, thin blades) or when the steel requires
a quenching bath that is hotter than room temperature I use this contraption.
This is a quenching tank that a friend of mine and I made from a 3 foot section of
4" diameter steel pipe. About the middle of the tank there
is a thermometer that extends to the inside of the tank and can register up to 500 degrees
Fahrenheit. At the base of the tank we have mounted a small hot water heater element
that can raise the temperature of the hydraulic fluid that's in the tank to 150
degrees in less than 15 minutes. Then I let it cool to about 125 before I use it.
